Long Summer Weekends: 5 Money Saving Trips for Your Travel Plans

May 24, 2015

Being aware of my spending habits has made travel plans somewhat tricky in the past. Because me and the hubby decided to prioritize saving over spending, we’ve yet to take the kids to Disneyworld or even Florida. Part of that is due to financial concerns, but we’ve also agreed that we won’t be making that first big family trip before our little man is old enough to appreciate it.

That being said, we also know that exploring new places is an excellent way to bring a family together, and while we might pinch pennies, when it comes to family, we’re all in. This year, we’ll be making a trip around the state to visit Indiana’s natural wonders, small towns, and most importantly, playgrounds. We’ve decided that a four day trip filled with playgrounds and nature trails is about the best family vacation we can think of. If you have your heart set on an adventure this summer, here are the 5 top tips I’ve used to keep the trip going strong without going into the red.

  1. Pack food. I can’t stress this one enough. Bring along a cooler packed with ice, even if it has to ride in the trunk. Fill it with drinks and snacks. You can probably bring along enough food to last the entire road trip for the cost of one day’s fast food stops. I’m still finding goldfish crackers in my backseat from last summer!
  2. Use that smart phone! You’ve heard the phrase “there’s an app for that”, and it is completely true. There’s an app for just about everything, but certainly for finding the best priced gas, the nearest park, and coupons for that restaurant when you can’t stomach another bologna sandwich.
  3. Bring your debit card, but keep it locked up and out of sight. Bring whatever cash you’ve budgeted for, and when that money starts to get low, you know it’s time to head home.
  4. Plan ahead! You can get great deals online and even bundle deals. If you’re going to a festival, check out the local chamber of commerce website. They might have some great deals for booking a room and getting tickets. Going to the zoo? See if they have free or reduced admission pricing on certain days, or with canned good donations. You can save a bundle!
  5. Finally, don’t overlook your own backyard. Sure, me and the family are heading out of town for our road trip, but you’d better believe we’re regulars at our local playgrounds. There’s a ton of stuff to do right here at home, so if you can’t afford to travel, or just want to save that money for another summer project, that doesn’t mean you have to limit the fun. Put on your best walking shoes and make like a tourist right here at home. You never know what you might discover.

And if you do have plans for that big vacation to explore a new country or region, and now is the right time for you and your family, I know a fantastic credit union that can help get you there. I hope everybody has a save and fun Memorial Day. I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading!
