Starting a Vision Board: How Seeing my Financial Goals Helped Me to Realize Them

Jan 04, 2015
The beginning of another year always brings a little bit of panic to my home. We’ve taken down the Christmas tree, braved the dusty weight scale in our bathroom, and took stock of where we are after three big holiday meals, countless cookies, and half of a gingerbread house. Losing weight is a pretty common resolution, at least for me, and it’s one that I have a really tough time sticking to. It’s not because I don’t enjoy exercising, and with three little ones, there are plenty of opportunities to get moving! It’s because I do enjoy the comfort of sitting down to a hot, delicious meal while it’s cold outside and the fire is burning in the fireplace. And while I know that you can still eat healthy and enjoy good food, I enjoy carbs just a little too much. So this year, I’m doing things a little differently…I’m putting up a vision board.

You might not have heard of these, or maybe you’ve seen some up on Pinterest. A vision board is a visual tool to remind yourself why you’re striving for your goal. When my husband and I made a commitment to lower our debt and start building a solid savings plan, we went in and talked with Afena about our options. I’m a pretty crafty person, so I took home their suggestions and put up our vision board.  We’d clip out articles, collect travel brochures, and print out college applications to pin up. We knew we wanted to go on family vacations, and education for our children is pretty high on our priority list. So we put them up, and every time we pinched pennies, our vision board showed us exactly what direction we were heading in.

So, I’m thinking, if it worked for my financial fitness, why not try it out for my physical fitness goals too?  I’m pinning up healthy (but delicious!) recipes, quick exercise tips, and motivational quotes. What’s on your vision board for 2015? I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading.
