Replacing our Roof, Losing our Chimney and Making it all Work

Nov 09, 2014
It became very obvious in spring this year that my husband and I were going to have to replace our roof. I absolutely love our home, and after the amount of work that went into making it happen, I might have on some rose colored glasses when it comes to its flaws. But even I couldn’t deny that the time had come for an upgrade. And since we’d made the switch to all electric from gas, there were some pipes that we also needed to remove from our roof.

Here’s one absolute truth that I’ve learned in having a home built and working with various contractors for electric, plumbing, excavating, and the list goes on…shop around! Collecting quotes for such big financial investments is smart, responsible, and if you’re actually financing that home with a loan, you’re not just saving the difference in quoted prices…you’re saving on interest as well. So we made some phone calls and collected some quotes, and finally decided on a company to handle the replacement of our old roof.

Everything went smoothly. The roof was replaced in one day, and it was great. We were all prepared to sign the check and call it a job well done, but first, my husband did a walk around the house to admire our new roof. But something was missing…our chimney. Just take a moment and think about that, I know we had to. Let me back up a little bit.  A while ago we converted from gas heat to electric, after that job was complete we realized we still had the old gas pipes sticking out on our roof.  So when we decided to replace the roof, we thought it was a great time to also have the unnecessary pipes removed.  Well apparently the contractor mistook our stove pipe type chimney as an “unnecessary pipe” and they removed it too.  To be honest, when we first noticed the chimney was gone we were horrified, but now, we laugh about it because we know it was an honest mistake, and this company rectified the situation immediately.  It just goes to show you, in home improvement, SOMETHING will come up…or down, as the case may be. Thank goodness we have our Home Equity Line of Credit at Afena Federal Credit Union for when the unexpected happens. I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading.
