Halloween Costumes: Finding My Inner Costume Designer With a Little Help From Pinterest

Oct 19, 2014
Halloween costumes…they are EVERYWHERE. You can buy them, you can make them, you can practically drown in them if you head down the wrong aisle at Wal-Mart. And I love it. Halloween is a pretty fun holiday when you get down to it. Who doesn’t love candy and dressing up? So I don’t want to come across as a Halloween Scrooge, but it’s been interesting this year. Both of my daughters are too tall for the toddler costumes, so I’ve been looking at the ones for young girls, and people, I am not impressed.

Sure, I want my girls to look cute, they ARE cute. I’m going to turn into a cliché parent here and say…how short do these skirts need to be? Look, I remember 1st grade, and I and three other girls all went as Rainbow Brite, with a plastic mask and everything. What happened to those plastic masks with the little elastic band that held it on your head? And if you went as a witch for Halloween, you went as a scary, UGLY, and usually GREEN witch. Not so much anymore.

So I was disenchanted with the racks of Halloween costumes. No problem, I have Pinterest, time to make our own! And wow, there are some talented people on Pinterest. But I have spunk, and everybody loves a little do-it-yourself fun. So this year, I’m committed to making the most awesome family costumes ever.  Because my kids are still young enough to think it’s fun and not embarrassing, and we have plans to trick-or-treat and party like little monsters that entire week.

Feeling a little brave yourself? Hit the internet, you’ll find tons of do it yourself costumes and inspiration. And then on October 30th, take your costumes for a test run at the Afena Monster Mini-Golf for Riley Fundraiser. Putt-putt, tenderloins, and trick-or-treating…I can’t wait! Maybe you’ll see me and my crew there. I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading.
