Celebrating the Sweetest Day in the Sweetest Way: Giving Back this October

Oct 12, 2014

Sweetest Day is next Saturday. Maybe you think it’s a holiday created by flower and card companies to help lift sales, and maybe you’re right. But it has a special place in my heart, because my husband and I were engaged on Sweetest Day, eight years ago. Of course, the date changes every year, but since it’s always on a Saturday, it usually works out pretty good for celebrating.

Last year, my husband brought home a dozen roses, but they weren’t just any roses. They were wooden roses he’d picked up at Afena Federal Credit Union the day before, and he got them for making a donation to Riley Children’s Hospital. Obviously, I loved them. They didn’t smell as nice as the real thing, and you’ll get splinters in your nose if you try too hard, but they meant so much to me. Having been to Riley Children’s Hospital myself when I was younger, I know what a wonderful and caring place it is. Who needs real roses when you know you’re making a difference for those kids and their families? Not me.

It feels good to support a cause, and if they make is easy, that’s even better. This year, I know Afena will be selling those wooden roses again, and I expect at least two dozen this time. We’ve feasted at Afena’s bake sale earlier this month, brought home little monsters Friday, and look forward to joining in the fun at a putt putt fundraiser they’re holding on October 30th. We get an experience and fun, Riley gets always needed donations, and Afena gets our loyalty, our attention, and our appreciation. It’s a winning proposition all the way around.

I believe that in today’s world, it’s so important to support each other and teach our children how to give back. I love it when there’s a chance to do that while having fun at the same time. I know where I’ll be on October 30th this year, and I hope I’ll see you there. I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading.
