First Day of Preschool: Remembering the Firsts and Anticipating Tomorrow

Sep 07, 2014

This week I dropped my second child off at pre-school for the first time. We got up in time to get big sis ready for kindergarten, eat some breakfast, and tuck the little man into a new diaper and his baby seat. And then away we went to the elementary school. My oldest started school a few weeks ago, so the sting has worn off. And I figured conquering that milestone meant baby girl’s first day of preschool would be a breeze, no big deal, just a little alone time for me and the baby…and boy was I wrong.

As she hefted her way too big backpack onto her tiny shoulders and skipped into the building, I found myself tearing up. And when she turned to give me one last wave and a big grin, I actually started flashing back…finding out we were expecting our second child, moving to a bigger home, trading in the car for a minivan, watching her big sister get to know and love her, holding her when she cried on that big sister’s first day of preschool...all of the moments that led up to that one  came rushing back. And I needed to take some time and remember how we got to this moment because it’s so easy to forget all the people that have helped you along the way.

When my husband and I found out we were expecting another child, our parents helped us decide what was important. We knew we needed a bigger house, a bigger vehicle, and a way to provide for our girls as they grew. Afena Federal Credit Union was able to help us with all of these material needs and gave us the peace of mind that came with setting up savings accounts and insurance policies for the unexpected. Our friends and family helped us to move into our new place, and our doctor and nurses helped us welcome a beautiful and healthy little girl into our family.

I know my baby girl has a lot of firsts in front of her, and I’ll probably get emotional about every single one of them. And I know that I am blessed to be surrounded by a family, community, and credit union that will help us navigate those firsts successfully. I’m Claire, the Afena blog mom. Thanks for reading.
